What's hiding in your jewellery box?

Hey Reader,

Earlier this week, I found myself digging out a massive ring from the back of my cupboard – hidden in a small box, tucked inside a bag, buried under years of "I'll deal with this later."

It belonged to my maternal great-grandmother, a fabulous (and very kind) woman who I only know as Mamée (maybe it was Simone?). Mamée wore this extravagant (by today’s standards) cocktail ring every single day of her later life. Or let me rephrase: every single time I saw her for the sixteen years I was alive.

Crucially, the ring wasn't a gift. My twice-widowed great-grandmother got this as a present for herself. It's like the piece was an extension of her, as grand and sparkly as she was.

This was the one thing my mother inherited of her beloved grandmother (hint: family feuds).

I've worn this heavy pile of sapphires and diamonds set on white gold (or is it platinum?) exactly once. It’s heavy. Also, I’ve retired my Louboutins a while back. I can’t quite rock up to the dog park with it (though I think I know someone who would).

Before me, my mother kept it for 25 years without wearing it a single time. Funny story. She actually cherished it so much that she hid Mamée's ring carefully, away from her other pieces of jewellery, only to forget where it was stashed. It was recovered, thankfully, from a hidden drawer in her dining room table. Then my mother passed away, eleven years ago now, and today, it’s in my hands. And I have no idea what to do with it.

Sound familiar?

As I prepare for Monday's upcoming masterclass with sustainable consultant and jeweller Danielle Keller Aviram, I've been thinking about the precious pieces we inherit – the ones we love, the ones we don’t, and those we don't know what to do with, all carrying various stories and weight beyond their material value. Gold teeth anyone?

Before Monday's masterclass, I invite you to:

Take a peek in your jewellery box.

What's hiding there?

What stories are waiting to be retold, reimagined, or released?

And listen to Danielle on the Metta Interview, to get a sense of her story before you join us on December 8th at 8am PST | 11 ET | 5pm CET for "Beyond the price of gold: Unlocking the holistic value in your jewellery box."

Danielle will guide us through the possibilities, help us ask the right questions, and share practical next steps for those inherited treasures.

This masterclass is just the beginning of a journey, one that starts with opening that dusty box and asking: what do I actually want to do with this?

Warmly,

P.S. Bring a piece (or a photo) if you'd like to share during our discussion. Sometimes the best conversations start with "I have this ring/necklace/brooch and I don't know what to do with it..."

PPS. Our masterclasses operate with a 'pay what you can' policy. Registration starts at 1$.
